A Special Christmas Themed Chicago the Beautiful Spotlight:

For those who jumped right to this bonus web page, I honor the immense beauty of my beloved hometown Chicago on each page of this website.

Since this is a special bonus web page, I would like to use it to pay homage to one of my favorite times of the year in Chicago

…which is Christmas time.

It’s super COLD, but Chicago is still astonishingly BEAUTIFUL that time of year. Enjoy!

“The most typically American place in America.” ~ James Bryce on Chicago, The American Commonwealth, (1888)

Chicago Community Showcase: Chicago at Christmas Time

It’s safe to say that there is no major American city more into the joy and fun of the Christmas season than the city of Chicago is.

Here are the receipts:

The Magnificent Mile Lights Festival is a beloved Chicago tradition which kicks off every Christmas season when over TWO MILLION lights illuminate Chicago’s Magnificent Mile. Enjoy!

For more than a hundred years, generations of shoppers – both young and old – have made the trip to Downtown Chicago to catch a glimpse of Marshall Field’s Christmas magnificence…a place full of wonder and magic during the holidays.

For many Chicagoans it was an opportunity to make treasured memories of a lifetime.

Although the name has changed from Marshall Fields to Macys, the more than a century old Chicago tradition remains. Check it out:

Macy’s Chicago Christmas Windows

Next we check out….

Christkindlmarket Chicago

“The Christkindlmarket Chicago brings a cherished German and European tradition with international flair and local charm to Chicago. Chicago’s largest open-air Christmas festival is an enchanting and inviting holiday village nestled in the center of the city’s downtown. Inspired by the 16th century Christkindlesmarkt in Nuremberg, Germany, one of the first holiday markets of its kind, the Christkindlmarket is well-known for its vendors’ high quality gifts and food, holiday cheer, and for being the ideal place for families to create their own holiday traditions.”

History of the Christkind

“The Christkind, a fairy-like being dressed in gold and white robes with a crown upon her golden locks, is the namesake of the Christkindlmarket Chicago. Christkind folklore dates back to the 1500s and stems from traditional customs: parades during the holiday season were guided by one “grand” angel, the Christkind. Since then, and still today, she is the bearer of gifts to most children in German speaking countries, much like Santa Claus is in the United States. Traditionally, gifts are exchanged December 24th and delivered by the Christkind, who leaves gifts under the Christmas tree and disappears before the children can catch a glimpse of her.” ~ From Christkindlmarket Chicago’s website

Here are two links which will give you a good idea of just how unique and special the beloved Christkindlmarket Chicago truly is:

Chicago is so Christmas-crazy that it even decorates some of it’s city buses and L-trains for Christmas.

And last but not least, here are 3 brief yet really cool videos which feature highlights of Christmas in Chicago.

Christmas in Chicago #3

“When I was a kid, we would get McDonalds on Christmas Eve, and that was a big deal because the closest one to the south side of Chicago was a 35 minute drive away. I remember opening the bag and smelling those fries, and even now when I smell them, it reminds me of Christmas Eve.” ~ Actress Jane Lynch

Indeed. Fond memories of growing up in Chicago are within the memories of countless native Chicagoans wherever they may reside on the globe.

“Sometimes words are just music themselves. Like ‘Chicago’ is a very musical sounding name.” ~ Tom Waits

Even Chicago’s name reeks art, just like the city itself does.

*This special bonus web page is dedicated to a badass city which enabled me and countless others over it’s revolutionary and pioneering history to aspire to be a one of a kind Character vs being the complete opposite.

Yes, a city can actually do that.

“I didn’t come here to be average.” ~ Basketball Legend Michael Jordan (A Chicago Character)

The truth is none of us came here to be “average” or “normal,” but those from or associated with Chicagoland seem to know this truth better than most.

“Chicago has always been a fertile and nurturing environment for those who march not to the beat of a different drummer, but to a different symphony. Loud and proud, Chicago’s distinctive personality has less to do with its gloriously distinctive architecture than it does with the sum of its people.”

“Unlike any other city in the land, Chicago accommodated its characters, celebrated them, in fact.” ~ Rick Kogan in the forward of the book “Chicago Originals” by Kenan Heise and Ed Baumann

The worst place in America for you to live if you’re striving to be average, normal, or to fit in is in Chicago.

“People who don’t fit in anywhere else fit in here. It’s a collection of square pegs.” ~ Artist, Golden Gloves Boxer and Character actor Tony Fitzpatrick as featured in the book “Never A City So Real: A Walk In Chicago” by Alex Kotlowitz

If you stick with this “square peg” of a web page, (and website), you will soon discover that being unique, abnormal, non-average, and distinctive, particularly when it comes to LOVE is “The Chicago Way.”

“There seems to be a different Chicago around every street corner, behind every bar, and within every apartment, two-flat, cottage, or bungalow. City of immigrants or city of heartless plutocrats, say what you will, Chicago almost defies interpretation. In many ways Chicago is like a snake that sheds its skin every thirty years or so and puts on a new coat to conform to a new reality.” ~ Dominic A. Pacyga, Chicago: A Biography

“The most typically American place in America.” ~ James Bryce of The American Commonwealth on Chicago in 1888

More than a century later, this web page will prove that sage truth about Chicago has not changed since 1888.

Chicago still very much is the most American City in America, particularly when it comes to the solidly democratic principles this nation was founded upon…

…democratic principles which are now under attack more than they have been since the time of the Civil War.

“One of the lessons that I grew up with was to always stay true to yourself and never let what somebody else says distract you from your goals. And so when I hear about negative and false attacks, I really don’t invest any energy in them, because I know who I am.” ~ Michelle Obama, a self proclaimed Chicago South Side Girl

That’s what me and countless other born and bred South Side Girls and other Native Chicagoans were taught as well, which is why you won’t find a city in America with more people who care less about what other people think of them than Chicago.

We all know what the word “born” means, but what does the word “bred” mean?

Bred: “a person reared in a specified environment or way.” ~ Google Dictionary

Indeed. Hence begins a valuable and timely lesson about just a few aspects of “The Chicago Way.”

“Chicago made me who I am.” ~ Michelle Obama

Another Chicago the Beautiful Spotlight:

“Make no little plans; they have no magic to stir men’s blood and probably themselves will not be realized. Make big plans; aim high in hope and work, remembering that a noble, logical diagram once recorded will never die, but long after we are gone will be a living thing, asserting itself with ever-growing insistency. Remember that our sons and grandsons are going to do things that would stagger us. Let your watchword be order and your beacon beauty. Think BIG.” ~ Daniel Hudson Burnham, the Legendary Chicago Architect and City Planner who is most responsible for designing a great deal of Chicago’s stunning beauty.

Fun Fact: Chicago’s own Daniel Burnham was also the man responsible for designing the breathtaking National Mall on Washington in DC.

“Architect Daniel Burnham was the Chairman of the Senate Park Commission, which created a comprehensive redesign of the National Mall and DC parks system in the early 1900s. At that time, he was also working for the Pennsylvania Railroad to design a new station. Burnham helped convince the Railroad to relocate their station from the Mall to a nearby site; the building he designed on that site is Union Station. In 1910, President Taft appointed Burnham Chairman of the US Commission on Fine Arts, which advised the Federal Government on the location and design of monuments like the Lincoln Memorial.” ~ Mall

Daniel Hudson Burnham (1846 – 1912)

“The prairie and the lake, each immeasurable by the senses, dictate the scale of possibility in Chicago. Whatever man undertakes here, should be either actually or seemingly without limit.” ~ Excerpt from Master Architect & City Planner Daniel Burnham’s 1909 Plan Of Chicago

Indeed. Daniel Burnham mandated that Chicagoans be or act as if they are LIMITLESS, and the City of Chicago eagerly picked up that baton as is illustrated by one of the city’s multiple and most cherished mottos “I Will.”

“In the history of American urban planning, Daniel Burnham’s 1909 Plan Of Chicago stands alone not only in it’s innate elegance, but also in it’s astonishing ambition. With near hubris, it counseled that the people of Chicago “must ever recognize the fact that their city is without bounds or limits” and that they themselves are “a population capable of indefinite expansion. More astonishing, much of it was implemented. Today’s Chicago is a living monument to the plan – which called for replacing chaos, filth and congestion of industrial turn-of-the-20th century Chicago with a formal downtown of skyscrapers, an accessible 20 – mile public park along Lake Michigan, and a necklace of parks and handsome boulevards uniting neighborhoods.” ~ Wall Street Journal

Question: Do you know who designed your city or town?

*Most* die hard Chicagoans definitely know Daniel Burnham.

Note: Much more on the legendary and iconic Chicago Character Daniel Burnham in my next website which will be exclusively based on a great deal of the fascinating and relevant history about my beloved Chicago.

Having the guts, courage, and audacity to “Think BIG” is how Chicago birthed, innovated, and created the Skyscraper, which some have said is the most important structure created for the world since the Egyptian Pyramids.

“It was in Chicago that the world’s first skyscraper rose up – and the city’s energy and dynamism has had a lasting impact on architecture throughout the 20th and 21st Centuries.” ~ Jonathan Glancey – BBC – October 2015

BBC – October 2015 – Chicago: The City That Changed Architecture Forever

*Included in my upcoming Chicago based website will be a LONG list of reasons to create a social media meme titled #ThanksChicago…

…and gifting the world with the Skyscraper is just one of the many things on that LONG list which the world should be thanking the Windy City for. Stay tuned.

“Chicago, in my humble opinion, is, architecturally, the best American city traditionally, and just visually. It’s so exciting.” ~ Frank Gehry – (Legendary Architect)

The legendary crooner Frank Sinatra knew the real deal about Chicago.

All cool ones do.

Frank Sinatra – My Kind of Town (Chicago Is) – From 1964 film “Robin & the 7 Hoods”

“I had no particular image of Chicago in mind when I wrote ‘My Kind of Town.’ All I wanted to do was write a song in praise of Chicago, and that’s what I did.” ~ Sammy Cahn, legendary songwriter

Those that actually know Chicago know how extremely easy it is to praise the Windy City.

That may be why the legendary Frank Sinatra recorded not just one iconic song about Chicago, (like he did with “New York, New York”), but TWO iconic songs:

Frank Sinatra – Chicago, My Home Town – (written by Fred Fisher)

Take that NYC. 🙂

“I must say that it’s easy to write nice things about Chicago because it’s that kind of town.” ~. Sammy Cahn

Renowned Guitarist Eric Clapton is also one who eagerly sings Chicago’s praises.

*It amuses me that the following video features Eric Clapton, along with musical great Billy Preston on keys, and some of the top studio musicians in the business singing about “Sweet Home Chicago” from a recording studio in Paris, France.

Longing for and praising Chicago while in Paris, France.

Yes, Chicago is that badass.

Eric Clapton & Crew performing the $!@% out of  “Sweet Home Chicago” in Paris, France, no less. 🙂  Enjoy!

And last but not least…..

President Obama with Mick Jagger, Buddy Guy, B.B. King, Jeff Beck and a host of other rock and blues music legends perform “Sweet Home Chicago” at the White House in 2012.

What can I say?

Chicago attracts and is uplifted by some really cool and legendary dudes….

….while it continuously gets dissed by guys who wouldn’t know cool or legendary if they came up and smacked them in the head.

As they say: Like Attracts Like

This brings me to a riddle of sorts from a past episode of the 90s hit TV show “The West Wing.”

Here is the relevant quote from the script from that episode:

Leo: You’re scared of Babish.

President Bartlet: Oh, like you’re not.

Leo: No, because we are both men of Chicago.

President Bartlet: What is it with people from Chicago that they’re so happy to have been born there? I meet so many people who can’t wait to tell me they’re from Chicago and when I meet them, they’re living anywhere but Chicago.

Leo: You wouldn’t understand.

*From Episode 219 of the acclaimed 90s TV political drama series “The West Wing”

Here is a snippet from The West WingEpisode 219 where you will find that iconic exchange between Leo and President Bartlet:

Leo was 100% correct.

Most folks (outside of Chicago) just don’t understand.

First about Chicagoans being so PROUD…

Many people outside of Chicago don’t get or understand why us Chicagoans are so proud of our city or the fact that we feel so blessed to be from Chicago…

….but pre-Covid, the tens of millions who visit the Windy City every year, so much so that they keep breaking Chicago’s visitor record over and over again, most definitely do understand.

Chicago Tribune – January 2019 – Chicago Sets New Tourism Record With Nearly 58 Million Visitors In 2018

Curbed Chicago – January 2018 – Record-Breaking Number of Tourists Visit Chicago In 2017

WTTW – January 2017 – Chicago Sets New Tourism Record in 2016

Curbed Chicago – April 2016 – Chicago Breaks Tourism Record With 52M Visitors in 2015

This is how BADASS my hometown is:

Chicago keeps getting major respect and keeps breaking its tourism record every year in spite of its many vocal and high profile haters.

In spite of all it’s plentiful and vocal haters….

…Chicago just keeps WINNING and having fun while doing it.

Bloomberg – September 2017: “War-Torn” Chicago Is More Popular With Tourists Than Ever

“Chicago, described by President Trump and others as a hellish, dystopian crime scene akin to a “war-torn nation” and “worse than Afghanistan” is about to shatter all of its tourism records, including the one it set last year.” ~ Bloomberg News – September 2017

I’m beginning to believe that all the hate Chicago is constantly receiving from its many haters, along with the media’s relentless false narrative about the city may actually be an asset to Chicago.

The irony?

The jealous Chicago haters are being extremely deceptive when they describe Chicago as a war zone….particularly considering this fact:

“A non-profit news outlet that focuses on gun coverage called The Trace, found that in gun violence per capita, Chicago isn’t even in the top 10 — or the top 15.

Miami, Washington, D.C. and other metro areas are worse.

And here are the absolute worst: New Orleans is on top, followed by Detroit, St. Louis, Baltimore and Oakland.

You have to go all the way down to number 18 to find Chicago, right behind Pittsburgh.

The report points out that Chicago does have the most homicides but its murder rate per capita is one third as high as New Orleans.

In another report, Trace detailed that in 2016, Chicago had a rate of 27.9 killings per 100,000 residents — half that of St. Louis, whose 188 murders amounted to 59.3 homicides per 100,000 people and preserved that city’s status as America’s murder capital.” ~ WGN – June 2017

That’s right. At that time more than a dozen other American cities, Washington DC included, had per capita been proven to have more violence than Chicago.

These facts are usually totally ignored by both the national media and by a certain #MAGA spouting Chicago hater who use to live in a building called the White House in Washington, DC. The irony.

“When The Trace crunched Chicago’s five year average last October, covering the years 2010 to 2015, the city came in eighteenth among the 82 American cities with populations greater than 250,000. Updating the same calculations to cover homicide rates for the years 2011 to 2016, Chicago’s falls to twelfth.” ~ The Trace – 2017

The question that needs to be asked is if the East Coast media, politicians, and others really care about the serious ramifications of gun violence in America and the devastating impact it has on its victims and their families…

….why is the focus always on only ONE city which isn’t even in the Top 10 of the most violent cities in America?

In my opinion, the answer to that question can be summed up in the following quote:

“News media from other cities, especially New York, are extremely jealous. That is why they continually run hit pieces on our city. Chicago’s crime rate is no better or worse than other major urban areas.” ~ Peter Bella – Chicago Now – (2013)

One word: BINGO

But its okay NYC and other East Coast Media. If I were you, I’d be jealous of Chi too.

Here is yet another irony…

While mighty and unbothered Chicago keeps bettering its best via continuously breaking its tourism record every year in spite of the hate that is constantly thrown at it from various other quarters across America, here is what is happening in regard to tourism for the U.S. as a whole:

*The following newspaper headlines are all before Covid-19 hit America:

The Washington Times – January 2018 – U.S. Tourism Takes A Hit After Trump Takes Office; Inbound Travel Down By 4 Percent: Report

NBC News – January 2018 – Tourism to U.S. Under Trump Is Down, Costing $4.6 Billion and 40,000 Jobs

The Daily Beast – August 2018 – The Trump Slump Hits U.S. Tourism

Commercial Observer – February 2018 – As Trump Effect Hits International Travel, US Hotel Sector Feels the Pain

“With a strong economy and the dollar slipping, travel to the U.S. should be trending up. Some hospitality experts are pointing at the hotelier-in-chief for the industry’s dark clouds.” ~ Commercial Observer – February 2018

Forbes – January 2019 – Worrying Trend As U.S. Loses International Tourism Market Share

“International travel statistics for 2018 are coming out, and they’re not pretty for the U.S. Simply put, we’re losing market share among destinations worldwide. While international travel overall was up about 6 percent for the year, travel into the U.S. from outside the continent rose a measly two percent.

In 2018, “the U.S. continued to lose market share as global travel expanded” according to a report released this week by travel industry economists Oxford Economics. While 2 percent growth doesn’t sound too bad in the abstract, it’s pretty paltry by comparison to arrivals to Europe and Asia (6 percent) and the Middle East (10 percent).” ~ Forbes – January 2019

These 7 words stuck out to me from the previous Forbes quote:

“In 2018, the U.S. continued to lose….”

Pre Covid, U.S. tourism was not losing or tanking in Chicago….

….nor was tourism tanking in Chicago’s “Land of Lincoln” home state, the great state of Illinois:

Chicago Tribune – May 2018 – Illinois Reports Record Tourism Numbers, With Nearly 114 Million Visitors

CBS2 (Chicago) – August 2020 – Illinois Tourism Had Another Record Year In 2019, Before Pandemic

‘The Illinois Office of Tourism Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity announced Friday that the state welcomed 120 million visitors in 2019. That was the ninth consecutive year that Illinois saw tourism growth.’

To the plentiful Chicago dissers and haters out there:

How many visitors did your city, town or home state have in 2019?

Anywhere close to 120 million?

What can I say? Chicago and my home state the “Land of Lincoln” aka Illinois stays winning in spite of the spite continuously directed their way.

Talking about Chicago specifically….

….NO city in America has more jealous haters lying about it, dissing it, and hating on it in America than Chicago does…

….yet Chicago still keeps SHINING and breaking tourism records year after year even with all its mediocre haters continuously putting it on blast…

….most of whom live in places in America where tens of millions are not flocking to visit every year.

Chicago has more than a million fewer residents than Los Angeles does, (my other hometown), yet even with Hollywood and the real possibility of movie star sightings, Chi had 8 million more visitors than Los Angeles did in 2018…

NBC Los Angeles – January 2019 – Los Angeles Reached Record Milestone of 50 Million Visitors in 2018

….while Chicago is slowly but surely gaining on the biggest city of all, New York.

New York Times – January 2019 – N.Y. Draws a Record 65 Million Tourists

Yes Chicago is the nation’s third largest city, but compared to the populations of New York, (8.5 million), and Los Angeles, (3.8 million)…

….Chicago (2.7 million), is the little city with no coast in the middle of America that could.

New York has more than triple the number of residents Chicago has yet only had 7 million more visitors than Chicago had in 2018.

Los Angeles has 1.1 million more residents than Chicago has yet Chicago had 8 million more visitors than LA had in 2018.

Oh yeah, Chicago has much to be proud of.

Like this:

Curbed Chicago – October 2017: Chicago Rated Top Big U.S. City By Condé Nast Traveler Readers

Voted second best in 2016 and third in 2015, Chicago has moved up the list once again.

“For the first time, the Second City was voted the number one big city in the U.S. to visit by the 300,000 readers of Condé Nast Traveler. This year’s CNT Readers’ Choice Awards saw Chicago advance one spot from its number two ranking in 2016. The lifestyle and travel publication singled-out the city’s recent culinary accolades, popular riverfront cruises, reputation for world-class live comedy, and the 2017 edition of the Chicago Architecture Biennial as contributors to its top billing.

“This title is a testament to the innovation found in our amazing architecture, the ingenuity captured at our award-winning restaurants and 67 breweries, and the congenial character of Chicagoans,” said Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel via official statement this week. “While our 77 neighborhoods each have unique cultures and characteristics, we are one Chicago, and we are proud of this distinction.” ~ Curbed Chicago – October 2017

*Notice how former Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel highlighted “the congenial CHARACTER of Chicagoans” as one of the city’s main attributes?

Character is always at the forefront in Chicago. It’s an extremely important trait, (whether for good or ill) to Chicagoans and to the city as a whole.

“Condé Nast Traveler readers cast hundreds of thousands of votes for their favorite cities in the U.S. in the 2017 Readers’ Choice Awards survey—in fact, we got so much feedback, we had to divide our list in two. This roundup features the country’s major metropolises, with populations over one million.” ~ Condé Nast – October 2017

And those “hundreds of thousands of votes” put Chi Town at #1 in 2017.

Update: Chicago Curbed – October 2018 – Chicago Voted Best Big City For A Second Time By Condé Nast Traveler Readers

“For a second time, readers of Condé Nast Traveler voted Chicago to be the best big city in its annual reader survey. While it’s no surprise to locals, everyone else is finally catching on. Between the lakefront, our world-class museums, and award-winning restaurants—what’s not to love?”

“Chicago beat out places like San Francisco, New Orleans, Denver, Boston, and even New York City.

Here’s what CNT had to say about Chicago:

Second City? Not by our count. Chicago is world-class in so many categories—magnificent architecture, stunning museums, brilliant chefs, a massive brewing scene, and so much to do that you’ll never see it all. Scratch the surface in the Loop and on the Gold Coast, then go deeper into the city’s 77 neighborhoods, where you’ll find cutting-edge restaurants (like Parachute), chilled out corner bars (Sportsman’s Club), and some of the most pleasant people you’ll find anywhere. It’s no wonder Chicago tops this list again.” ~ Curbed Chicago – October 2018

And if winning the honor of coming out at #1 on Condé Nast Traveler’s prestigious annual list two times in a row wasn’t impressive enough for you:

Marketwatch – October 2019 – Chicago Is Top Tourism Pick Among Big U.S. Cities For Third Year Running

“Windy City was selected in a survey of more than 600,000 Condé Nast readers asking about travelers’ recent visits.” ~ Marketwatch – October 2019

Keep in mind, it’s not the editors at the world-renowned Condé Nast Traveler who keeps doing this…

…it is hundreds of thousands of seasoned travelers aka hundreds of thousands of  PEOPLE who have traveled across the nation and the world so they have many points of comparison in regard to the top cities who keep voting to bestow this extraordinary honor on my beloved hometown year after year…..

…people who, (unlike most Chi haters), have actually been to Chicago.

And if Chicago winning this honor three times in a row wasn’t mind blowing enough for you….

Again, what can I say?

Chicago is LIT.

Chicago is just so UNIQUE.

This is one of many reasons why Chicago finds its many mediocre and jealous haters amusing.

Chicago’s attitude towards its many tired and vocal haters can be summed up as:

“Let the haters hate cuz they prove we’re doing great.”

“The best food is in Chicago. There are great restaurants everywhere, from fancy places to burger joints.” ~ Steve Carell

Guess who agrees with comedian and actor Steve Carell?

Bon Apetit, the premier foodie magazine agrees. It crowned Chicago the “Restaurant City of the Year” in 2017.

Conde Nast Traveler said the exact same thing about Chicago’s food scene in 2017:

Chicago Eater – May 2017 – Chicago is America’s Best Restaurant City, Topping L.A., Says Conde Nast Traveler

“Sorry, Los Angeles, but this is the best restaurant city in America right now. You may think it’s all steakhouses and encased meats here, but there’s a reason the James Beard Foundation moved its awards show to Chicago in 2015.” ~ Chicago – (May 2017)

Speaking of “steakhouses and encased meats”….

One of the reasons why Chicago has some of the BEST restaurants in America is because “Hog Butcher to the World” Chicago has the very BEST quality meats available anywhere, like you will find at The Chicago Steak Company. Be sure to check it out.

And if you think Chicago only ranks at or near the top of cities in the US, think again:

In 2018, The Insider chose it’s “50 Places To Travel In 2018” listing.

They put Ninh Binh, Vietnam at #1….

…..Lake District, Cumbria, England at #2

….and Chicago, IL at #3.

Yes in 2018, Chicago beat out NYC, London, Paris, Rome, Melbourne, Barcelona, and every other global city you’re used to hearing about to make the Top 3 on the list of premier global cities.

The next U.S. city on that 2018 list was New Orleans at #9, NYC at #32, London at #37, and Paris at #44.

“What is Paris next to Chicago? Has Paris got Lake Michigan?” ~ Richard J. Daley Sr. – Legendary Chicago Mayor

The following also happened in 2018:

In a huge global survey, Time Out London quizzed 15,000 people to rank the most exciting cities in the world…

….and guess which city came out on top at #1 for the second year in a row in that well-known global survey?

You guessed it……Chicago.

That’s right ladies and gents….my beloved Chicago was named The #1 MOST EXCITING CITY IN THE WORLD for the second year in a row on Time Out London’s Global Survey 2018.

For those still out of the loop on just how magnificent and badass a city Chicago is…

…tens of millions of people from America and from around the world totally understand WHY.

“Chicago is top of the list, with a little help from it’s outstanding food and bar scene. It also scores above average when it comes to happiness, culture, affordability, city pride, and how people feel about their neighborhood.” ~ The Time Out City Life Index 2018

Time Out London’s Top 10 Cities for 2018 were:

1) Chicago

2) Porto (Portugal)

3) NYC

4) Melborne

5) London

6) Madrid

7) Manchester

8) Lisbon

9) Philadelphia

10) Barcelona

The irony?

The vast majority of Americans have absolutely no clue that they live in a country which has an amazing city right in the heart of America that has been deemed “the most exciting city in the world” by a renowned survey of thousands of people from around the world for the second year in a row, in addition to the many other honors Chicago has achieved, both mentioned and not mentioned on this web page.

Chicago is so coveted, respected, envied, and admired, and is seen as the BEST city in the world by many around the world.

Meanwhile Chicagoans been knew.

“Chicago is second to none when it comes to food and drink: the Midwestern metropolis was ranked number one in the world for supping and sipping. But between Italian beefs and slices of deep dish pizza, we make time to hit the gym: 52 percent of us can’t get through the week without exercise. And it seems that our balanced lifestyle leads to happiness, with more respondents reporting genuine contentment than anywhere else.” ~ Morgan Olsen, Time Out Chicago – (March 2019)

*The above quote was from the Time Out London Global Survey 2019 where Chicago slip down two places on the list to #3.

Full Disclosure: NYC was #1 in 2019 and Melbourne, Australia was #2.

This part of that Morgen Olsen quote bears repeating:

“And it seems that our balanced lifestyle leads to happiness, with more respondents reporting genuine contentment than anywhere else.”

This is precisely why most Chicagoans find their decidedly unexciting and exceedingly mediocre haters all over the country so gosh darned amusing.

Chicagoans ain’t mad.

Not in the least…because they have far too many exciting and too many fun things to do.

One more time for the folks in the back:

Let the haters hate cuz they prove we’re doing great.” ~ Chicago’s attitude towards its many haters

This just goes to show that a great deal of what is reported in the U.S. media is not based on the truth but based on a narrative that is most times false.

Chicago is not the only topic which the Corporation owned media in this country works very hard to sell a false narrative about rather than simply reporting based on the God’s honest truth.

“A big hand, please, for Chicago: the greatest city in the world, beating all comers. Chicagoans raved about their city’s bar scene, its live music and culture, its local neighborhoods and its affordability. It was one of the happiest and proudest cities worldwide. In fact, it only fell short on safety and whether it had become a better place to live over time. Don’t go changing, Chicago: we love you just the way you are.” ~ Time Out London – January 2018

Don’t worry Time Out London…

The one thing Chicago has no problem being is ITSELF, and it makes no apologies for that.

Chicago will always continue to be it’s original, beautiful, nonconformist, smart, innovative, passionate, eccentric, romantic, fun, clever, tough, badass and REAL self….

…..while also always continuing to evolve into something newer and better. Believe that.

“Chicago is the world’s window into the future.” ~ Perry Davis – Historian

It should really come as no surprise that the same people who are prone to shun being educated hate Chicago so much considering the following fact:

Crain’s Chicago – October 2017 – Chicago Is Now The Nation’s Best-Educated Big City

Chicago Magazine – January 2018 – Chicago Is Now Better Educated Than Its Suburbs

Chicago even educated Meghan Markle aka “The Duchess of Sussex.”

Meghan Markle lived in Chicagoland while attending Northwestern University where she double-majored in Theater and International Relations.

Chicago may be the most educated city in the U.S, but the Windy City values having commonsense over anything else.

“We must not only educate the mind, but also the heart.” ~ Kobi Yamada

Meanwhile, the following is the hard truth about Chicago’s most vocal haters:

The Washington Post – March 2018 – As Americans Become More Educated, the GOP is Moving in the Opposite Direction

Newsweek – July 2017 – Majority of Republicans Say Colleges Are Bad For America (Yes, Really)

When you diss education, you tend to believe untrue things like the following:

FYI Republican Senator Marsha Blackburn….

Chicago has the 3rd largest economy in America.

San Francisco has the 4th largest economy in America.

In fact here are the #Receipts.  It’s a listing of the Top 10 largest city economies in America:

Top 10 Largest U.S. Cities by GDP – (Source:

1. New York-Newark-Jersey City: $1.8T
2. Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim: $1T
3. Chicago-Naperville-Elgin: $689B
4. San Francisco-Oakland-Berkeley: $549B
5. Washington-Arlington-Alexandria: $541B
6. Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington: $513B
7. Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land: $479B
8. Boston-Cambridge-Newton: $464B
9. Philadelphia-Camden-Wilmington: $444B
10. Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Alpharetta: $397B

Notice that a city from Senator Marsha Blackburn’s state Tennessee is nowhere on that list.

In fact, every city on that Top 10 list is a city that is BLUE, (Democratic), not RED, (Republican), and that includes Dallas TX and Houston TX, both which regularly vote BLUE and both which voted heavily for Biden-Harris in 2020 even though Texas stayed red.

The reality is that it’s BLUE Democratic cities like Chicago which fund America, including federally dependent red states like Marsha Blackburn’s Tennessee.

“A new study suggests Tennessee isn’t paying its way in America as the state’s residents and government are taking more from the federal government than they’re putting in.

The report is from WalletHub, a financial-advice website that also releases studies on economic and social issues affecting U.S. states and cities.

The new report, released today, figures Tennessee’s state government is the third most-dependent state on federal funding, a figure derived from the proportion of state revenue that comes from the federal government in the form of intergovernmental aid. It also estimates Tennessee residents are the 20th most-dependent on federal aid, which was calculated by dividing federal funding to state’s residents by IRS collections from state residents.

The study also says Tennesseans have the sixth-lowest tax rate in America.

WalletHub calculated its data based on statistics from the Internal Revenue Service, the U.S. Census Bureau,, the Bureau of Labor Statistics and

Kentucky earned the study’s dubious distinction as the most-dependent state on federal funding, followed by Mississippi, New Mexico, Alabama and West Virginia, By contrast, Delaware is the study’s least-dependent state on federal funds, followed by Minnesota, New Jersey, Illinois and California.”

Most federal-fund-dependent states:

1. Kentucky

2. Mississippi

3. New Mexico

4. Alabama

5. West Virginia

6. South Carolina

7. Montana

8 Tennessee

9. Maine

10. Indiana

Least federal-fund-dependent states:

1. Delaware

2. Minnesota

3. New Jersey

4. Illinois

5. California

6. Kansas

7. Nevada

8. Massachusetts

9. Connecticut

10. New Hampshire” ~ Knox News/USA Today – March 2017

Notice that with the exception of Maine at #9, every last one of the most dependent on the federal government states are Republican Red States.

Also notice that Chicago and San Francisco, the two cities Republican Senator Marsha Blackburn chose to falsely single out, represent #4 and #5 on the list of the least federal fund dependent states.

Maybe Senator Marsha Blackburn should have just stuck with her skill set….

….being a Clothing Consultant.

See? Red State Republicans are always talking ridiculous nonsense about Chicago.

Forbes – May 2020 – Blue State Bailout? Red State Residents Received Largest Stimulus Checks, And Millions In Federal Aid

MarketWatch – June 2019 – States That Voted for Trump Depend the Most on ‘Big Government’

“Here’s the irony. Residents of “blue” states send more tax money to Washington than they get back in federal help, while residents of “red” states send less money to Washington than they get back in federal help.

In 2015, for example, New Jersey got back only 74 cents in federal spending for every tax dollar it sent to Washington. New York got back 81 cents, Connecticut: 82 cents, and Massachusetts: 83 cents.

But when you turn to the red states, it’s the opposite. Mississippi received $2.13 for every tax dollar it sent to Washington. West Virginia: $2.07. Kentucky: $1.90. And South Carolina: $1.71.” ~ How Blue States Help Red StatesSalon Magazine – November 2018

One would think a US Senator like Marsha Blackburn would know this truth but apparently not.

Pro Tip: Valuing higher education may make Chi hating Republicans much less dependent on big government and much less prone to being so easily misinformed, misled, or so easy to believe baseless lies like the 2020 election was stolen.

Speaking of the important topic of education..

…a majority of the usual Republican suspects who are always lying about and dissing Chicago becoming less educated and believing higher education is bad for America….

….and Chicago being one of the most educated cities in America and home to multiple top world renowned universities….

….is very much connected to why Chicago is so amused by its haters, and why Chi haters like Senator Marsha Blackburn keep talking BS and lying about Chicago.

For example on its annual listing of The 100 Best Universities in the World Today for 2018, ranked the University of Chicago at #3, only behind UC Berkeley and Harvard University.

This means last year U of Chi was ranked higher than Yale, Princeton, Oxford, Georgetown, MIT, Stanford, Cornell and many of the other well known usual suspects.

*Chi’s Northwestern University is at #24 on the list.

Yes, two of the Top 25 best universities in the world are in Chicago, one in the Top 3.

Pro-Tip for folks like Senator Marsha Blackburn:

If just like with the Civil War, you convince yourself that your side is the independent winner when real deal reality says you are really the federally dependent loser….

…steeping yourself in that delusional lie means you are susceptible to believing anything.

Speaking of winners…..

…my upcoming website exclusively about Chicago will prove that in terms of smarts, accomplishment, beauty, innovation, creativity, being the first, and just plain audacity, in too many ways to document on one web page, Chi runs circles around its many jealous, mediocre, and federally dependent haters.

My website will cover a great deal about just a fraction of what Chicago has innovated, accomplished, achieved, gifted, created, pioneered, and done for both America and the world. Stay tuned.

The legendary and world renowned Chicago architect Louis Sullivan said it best about his fellow Chicagoans:

“We are the crudest, rawest, most savagely ambitious dreamers and doers in the world.” ~ Legendary Architect Louis Sullivan’s take on Chicago

Yes, Chicago has MANY problems, many issues, and many faults, the most notable being too much Gun Violence which although not as bad as many other American cities, absolutely must be dealt with.

Like every other city, Chi is by no means perfect nor does it try to be, BUT…

…Chicago is still the BEST, most beautiful, most fun, most creative, most passionate, most innovative, most inspiring, most romantic, most legendary, most inventive, most eccentric, most caring, most pioneering, most exciting, the toughest city and the most BADASS city in America.

Anyone who wants to challenge that, have at it, but just make sure you come with iron-clad receipts, (proof) when you do.

Receipts like these:

A Chicago the Beautiful Spotlight

The Most Gorgeous City In America

“I wish I could go to America if only to see that Chicago.” ~ Otto von Bismarck, the first Chancellor of the German Empire between 1871 and 1890

*Bismarck reportedly made this comment to the Union Civil War Hero General Philip Sheridan in 1870 when the General was in Europe to honor the Iron Duke’s rout of Napoleon III, (per author Donald L. Miller’s book “Chicago: City of the Century”)

General Sheridan had moved to Chicago after the Civil War after Chi haters favorite Civil War General Robert E. Lee waved the white flag in defeat.

In fact, one of Chi’s most prominent streets is named after a true Civil War hero, General Philip Sheridan aka one of the badass guys who along with Illinois’ own Abraham Lincoln and Illinois’ own General Ulysses S. Grant actually won the Civil War and prevented these United States from being torn apart by the Confederate losers.

*The century and a half long lionizing of Robert E. Lee and other Confederate losers by guys who are typically Chicago haters, for a war Lee lost to guys from Chicago’s own home state is something else which Chicago finds amusing about its many haters.

At least Chicago doesn’t have to lie, weave a fantasy, or pretend like its side in the Civil War are actual heroes or winners.

Being the real deal Civil War hero that he was…

…General Philip Sheridan, one of the men directly credited with defeating the Confederacy and saving America from being torn apart by the South, had moved to Chicago after the Civil War, and as I noted earlier, one of Chi’s most prominent streets is named after him.

Here is a link to an interesting and not entirely complimentary article about the extremely heroic yet also extremely flawed General Phil Sheridan’s time in Chicago:

Chicago Tribune – December 2014 – Why It’s Called Sheridan Road — Or How The General Saved Chicago

Fast Forward to the 21st Century:

Apparently millions of people from all over the world still feel the same way about Chicago as many did way back in the 1800s.

Like Otto von Bismarck, the first Chancellor of the German Empire, they just have to see it.

Many people feel they just have to see Chicago, which brings me to…

The late Princess Diana of Wales

Interestingly, Prince Harry’s mom the late Princess Diana visited Northwestern University in 1996 while on a visit to Chicago which is the same school her future daughter in law Meghan would attend three years later.

Sadly it was Princess Diana’s last official visit to the U.S. before she tragically died a year later in a car crash in Paris in 1997.

Considering the US and Chicago have many fine colleges and universities, what are the odds that a year before her tragic death, Princess Diana would choose what I believe to be her one and only university to visit in America, a school that would three years later be her future American daughter in law’s university?

Princess Di even honored the school by wearing a Versace dress in Northwestern U’s school color Purple while visiting the school.

Chicago Tribune – June 2016 – 20 Years Ago This Weekend, Princess Diana Wowed Chicago in NU Purple

And if that’s not spooky enough, long after her Chicago visit, Princess Di was snapped wearing a Northwestern U sweatshirt, a sweatshirt she received directly from the school her future daughter-in-law Meghan would soon attend, while going to a gym in London:

Again, what are the odds?

*In 2019 I wrote about Princess Diana’s mysteriously fated 1996 visit to Chicago and her future daughter in law’s alma mater Northwestern University for the website Meghanpedia.

*You can check out my article for Meghanpedia titled “Duchess Meghan, Princess Diana & Synchronicity: All Roads Lead To Chicago” here.

And of course, the late Princess Diana simply had to visit Chicago, (just like most others from around the world do.)

“I love Chicago,” Diana said as she boarded a British Airways plane for her flight home. “It’s been wonderful.” ~ Northwestern University Magazine

In fact Princess Diana’s son and Meghan’s husband Prince Harry also jumped at the chance to visit Chicago.

Prince Harry was in Chicago in October 2017, (a month before proposing to Meghan), for the Obamas first summit for their upcoming presidential library, The Obama Foundation.

Prince Harry was a featured speaker at the summit and went with his friend Michelle Obama to Chicago’s Hyde Park High School to inspire the kids.

Prince Harry even made sure to have some of Chicago’s world famous deep dish pizza while there as this brief linked video details.

Harry & Michelle in Chicago – (October 2017)

*Also here is a link to the fascinating conversation Prince Harry had in front of 500 young activists and change makers at the Obama Summit in Chicago in 2017.

Speaking of the Obama Foundation, Chicago is about to become even more LIT with the addition of the Obama Presidential Center.

In fact once the center opens, I predict Chicago will begin to easily beat NYC as the city with the most visitors every year, (if Chi doesn’t beat NYC before that.)

Check out the video embedded in the following Obama Foundation tweet (or the video underneath it) to see just how magnificent and unique the Obama Presidential Center will be.

It will be yet another beautiful jewel to add to Chicago’s already jewel laden crown. Enjoy!

“Let me tell you something. I’m from Chicago. I don’t break.” ~ Barack Obama

There is just something about Chicago which brings me to…

Love Chicago Style

“You never lose by loving; you always lose by holding back.” ~ Dr. Barbara De Angelis

Coming up are REAL life examples of LOVE….REAL LOVE, not the fake love which Hollywood and the mainstream media peddles via shows like “The Bachelor” and “The Bachelorette” or the myriad of other so called “reality” TV shows on the air right now that are very poorly faking love and romance.

I don’t know if anyone else over the age of 40 has noticed the totally empty void for anything resembling love and romance there is now in American pop culture and society.

There are so few beautiful and romantic love songs or love ballads being put out by the music industry right now.

When pop music is limited on LOVE, society as a whole loses because love inspires much and is the biggest inspiration for creative talent. There are few to none classic or timeless love songs being created today and this in my opinion is seriously hurting our global society right now at a time when we most need it.

There is also an empty void in terms of good romantic films, both on television and in the movie theaters. They simply don’t exist anymore.

As a result, what has filled this void with the public are things like Tinder, Internet Porn and unreal Reality Shows which promote a “love as a survival of the fittest competition” false narrative to be engaged in based on what you have or on what you look like vs what is deeply embedded in your heart and soul.

I feel so sorry for kids and teens coming of age right now because they have almost no pop culture examples or representations of REAL LOVE, and many adults who once knew what real love looked and/or felt like have simply forgotten it.

When you forget the beauty of how REAL LOVE looks and feels, you don’t aspire for real love, and when you don’t aspire for real love, (if you are not fortunate enough to already have it), you become negative, cynical, depressed and miserable, and life stops feeling like it’s worthwhile, meaningful, or fun.

This extremely sad reality is a HUGE reason out of many for why our society is in such a HUGE mess right now….

..because of a LACK OF LOVE, both reflected in our every day lives, and reflected in our global society and pop culture.

I say all of this to say that for all the above reasons this special web page is filled with numerous examples of what REAL LOVE looks like so that some people can learn what it looks and feels like probably for the first time in their lives, and so that other people can remember what REAL LOVE looks and feels like after having long forgotten it.

Via my many “Chicago the Beautiful Spotlights” which lead almost every web page on this website…

..I think I have already conclusively proven that Chicago is hands down the most beautiful city in America, (and definitely one of the most beautiful cities in the world)….

…but this Chi beauty spotlight will also pair Chicago with another wonderful aspiration…

…which is LOVE.

Coming up are links to my hand-picked selection of 25+ highly romantic Chicago proposal/engagement videos…

…most of which showcases the romance and beauty of the Windy City as it’s canvas.

Chicago is the picture perfect back drop while the happy couple bask in Chicago’s loveliness.

I would first like to share a touching romantic movie scene which uses Chicago’s extraordinary beauty as a background and that fact making the film scene all the more poignant.

*The film scene is from the movie “My Best Friend’s Wedding” starring Julia Roberts and Dylan McDermott. Enjoy!

“If you love deeply, you’re going to get hurt badly…but it’s still worth it.” ~ C.S. Lewis

*Actor Dylan McDermott reminisced about his role in this lovely film in 2015, almost 20 years after it was made, and of course this scene is his favorite.

He said Chicago is as much a character in the film as anything else, and he gave a really cool Chicago Love shout out.

Wow….I guess that scene really is iconic.

Here is Dylan McDermott talking about it again in 2017.

*Take notes, gentlemen!

**One of many, many romantic and lovely things a couple can do in Chicago is take a Water Taxi Ride together.

It costs $5.00 per person one way, but you can get an all day pass to ride it all day for only $10.00 and is highly recommended.

This brief video from Grainger Everyday Heroes gives more insight on Chicago’s highly unique Water Taxi Service.

Chicago Water Taxi operates from March to November, and many Chicagoans use it for their daily commute to and from work.

It’s like having a mini-vacation twice a day, (of course, monthly passes are also available.)

Pro Tip For Couples: Get an all day pass for only $10.00 per person, and enjoy Chicago’s incredible romance and scenic beauty day and night because a Water Taxi Ride in Chicago at night is even more romantic and MAGICAL as this brief yet lovely video proves.

MY HOMETOWN. No wonder Chicagoans tend to be so special and unique 🙂

“It is given to some cities and to some lands to suggest romance and to me Chicago did that hourly. It sang, I thought, and in spite of what I deemed my various troubles, I was singing with it. Chicago was so young, so blithe, so new, I thought. Florence in it’s best days must have been something like this to young Florentines or Venice to young Venetians.” ~ Theodore Dreiser, legendary author and journalist remembering his newspaper days in Chicago during the late 1800s

And Chicago still possesses that same romantic aura and magic which Dreiser spoke of more than a century ago.

I’m not sure about Florence or Venice, but the following 25+ linked engagement videos prove that present-day Chicago has that same unique romantic quality remembered by Dreiser in the late 1800s.

In fact if anything Chicago is now even more romantic, and definitely much more BEAUTIFUL.

In the same way Chicago does everything else with no pretense or hypocrisy, the way Chicagoans love and show feeling is also very REAL.

Chicago is a city which absolutely reeks ROMANCE.

In the following brief yet adorable 2012 video…

…Barack & Michelle Obama talk about their first date in Chicago and of course it was super romantic:

“Vulnerability is not weakness. Vulnerability is our most accurate measurement of courage.” ~ Dr. Brene Brown

*Check out this article titled “The More Vulnerable You Are, The Stronger Your Relationship Will Become”

Many Chicago guys are PERFECT combinations of toughness, strength, commonsense, and maturity, but many are also vulnerable enough to express their love and emotions.

These qualities are what most equally GROWN WOMEN (or what I call Goddesses) truly want in a man, (see “The Age of the Goddess” series coming up in this website for explanation and confirmation.)

Every relationship and every marriage will eventually have ups and downs.

Bonus Wedding: One of the partners and family in this wedding is from Chicago but this wedding took place in New York State. Still, it’s a very touching wedding so here it is as a bonus wedding.

*The bonus wedding video linked above featured a song that has been played at many weddings called “Forever More” and you can check out the music video for that stellar song here.

“You know you’re in love when you can’t fall asleep because reality is finally better than your dreams.” ~ Dr. Seuss

As I’m sure you noticed….

… all of those lovely and extremely touching wedding videos, even though the many cultures, the diversity, and the individuality of each of those weddings made them highly unique, the common denominator between all of the weddings was the expressed and highly visible hopes and dreams of EVERY couple, and their families and friends…

…which coincidentally matches and expresses the hopes and dreams of every American citizen.

In spite of the amazing array of cultures and the stunning diversity represented in those 55 beautiful wedding videos…

…ALL gathered for their happy occasions shared the same hopes, the same dreams, the same laughter, the same joy, and most of all, the same LOVE we all dream of having and experiencing in life.

Chicagoans have a knack for expressing in visible form what our hearts desire most.

Chicago is not afraid. It doesn’t know what the word “reserved” means.

My hometown is filled to the brim with demonstrative and expressive people….

……people who wear their hearts on their sleeves.

What Chicago reveals in those 55 lovely wedding videos with their beautiful mix of many cultures and diversity is the TRUTH about America…

….a truth which will NEVER die no matter how many desperately try to kill it out of weakness and scared panic because of their own perceived inferiority or rank insecurity.

“The greatest problem in the world today is intolerance. Everyone is so intolerant of each other.” ~ Princess Diana

We are a nation of immigrants all seeking a good and happy life, a great and profound love, our own unique version of the American Dream, and this nation will always be that….

….which brings me back to Chicago.

“Chicago expresses the truth about the United States.” ~ Marco d’Eramo, Italian Sociologist

Chicago does indeed express the authentic truth about this country in so many ways…

….but the main way Chicago expresses the truth about America is in how it welcomes, respects, and celebrates its immigrants.

In short, dissing, scapegoating, and vilifying our nation’s immigrants is not “The Chicago Way.”

Case in point:

The Most Diverse Street in America – Devon Ave. – Chicago IL

“Right now, when we’re hearing so much disturbing and hateful rhetoric, it is so important to remember that our diversity has been – and will always be – our greatest source of strength and pride here in the United States.” ~ Chicago’s own Michelle Obama

Instead of calling entire groups of people “terrorists” or “rapists”…

….Chicago prefers to learn about other cultures and just DANCE together.

Cool huh?

Chicago’s culture and diversity always has been and always will be America’s top model for what this American democracy was founded to be….

…and for this reason Chicago’s beauty is more than it’s incredible and pioneering architecture, and it’s astonishing surface beauty….

….but also the beauty of the city’s HEART.

How fitting because Chicago is the city which most represents America’s “Heartland”…

…and is a city which is commonly labeled “The Heart of America.”

“Chicago is the heart of America. It is the quintessential American city. We do not fear. When the going gets rough we work harder, we innovate, we rebuild, retool, and we survive. Chicago knows how to rebuild and innovate. Chicago has continued on a path of survival since its inception. If any city has an exclusive claim to be survivalist it is Chicago.” ~ Peter Bella – Chicago Now Magazine

Most Chicagoans, (as the 55 lovely wedding highlight videos posted above prove), have no fear of showing and demonstrating their LOVE for their loved ones….

…but more importantly, most Chicagoans do not fear immigrants or DIVERSITY.

To Chicago that is the epitome of being LAME and WEAK, two words the Windy City will never be accused of being, which is why Chicago is and will always be…

“The most American place in America.” ~ The Telegraph UK on Chicago – October 2017

Back to LOVE…

We may be disappointed…we may be mistaken…we may be hurt….we may have to try and try again while learning along the way….

….but everyone desires to find that ONE love which will last a lifetime.

To love on that rare level is the reason for living and should never be given up on.

“Oh, to be loved like that… to have a man look at you with such intent, purpose driven eye contact, that there are no need for words. . the look in his eyes says it all. The way she touches him? ugh.. You can feel a man’s soul, you become one with him, using just your hands running across his body; hear his secrets by putting your head on his chest. This video represents the absolute purest form of intimacy between two people. If you’ve known love like this, you’re a VERY blessed person .. One can only hope to be so lucky!” ~ Jerilyn Morris commenting on this video

“To those who have given up on love, I say “Trust life a little bit.” ~ Maya Angelou

Giving up on love is giving up on life because the whole purpose of life is to LOVE. A life without love is merely existing, not living.

As I demonstrated via quotes from him which I posted above, the late great Reggae Master Bob Marley was quite a romantic.

Here is a real showstopper of a quote from Marley:

“Only once in your life, I truly believe, you find someone who can completely turn your world around. You tell them things that you’ve never shared with another soul and they absorb everything you say and actually want to hear more. You share hopes for the future, dreams that will never come true, goals that were never achieved and the many disappointments life has thrown at you. When something wonderful happens, you can’t wait to tell them about it, knowing they will share in your excitement. They are not embarrassed to cry with you when you are hurting or laugh with you when you make a fool of yourself. Never do they hurt your feelings or make you feel like you are not good enough, but rather they build you up and show you the things about yourself that make you special and even beautiful. There is never any pressure, jealousy or competition but only a quiet calmness when they are around. You can be yourself and not worry about what they will think of you because they love you for who you are. The things that seem insignificant to most people such as a note, song or walk become invaluable treasures kept safe in your heart to cherish forever. Memories of your childhood come back and are so clear and vivid it’s like being young again. Colours seem brighter and more brilliant. Laughter seems part of daily life where before it was infrequent or didn’t exist at all. A phone call or two during the day helps to get you through a long day’s work and always brings a smile to your face. In their presence, there’s no need for continuous conversation, but you find you’re quite content in just having them nearby. Things that never interested you before become fascinating because you know they are important to this person who is so special to you. You think of this person on every occasion and in everything you do. Simple things bring them to mind like a pale blue sky, gentle wind or even a storm cloud on the horizon. You open your heart knowing that there’s a chance it may be broken one day and in opening your heart, you experience a love and joy that you never dreamed possible. You find that being vulnerable is the only way to allow your heart to feel true pleasure that’s so real it scares you. You find strength in knowing you have a true friend and possibly a soul mate who will remain loyal to the end. Life seems completely different, exciting and worthwhile. Your only hope and security is in knowing that they are a part of your life.” ~ Bob Marley

Lastly, about helping you to become FEARLESS:

“Outsiders only know half the truth about this city.” ~ The New York Times on Chicago – Christmas Eve 1893

And more than a century later, that is still true…

…which brings me back to this quote from “The West Wing” TV series:

Leo: You’re scared of Babish.

President Bartlet: Oh, like you’re not.

Leo: No, because we are both men of Chicago.

President Bartlet: What is it with people from Chicago that they’re so happy to have been born there? I meet so many people who can’t wait to tell me they’re from Chicago and when I meet them, they’re living anywhere but Chicago.

Leo: You wouldn’t understand.

*From Episode 219 of the acclaimed 90s TV political drama series “The West Wing”

That quote alludes to the fearless nature of the authentic Chicagoan….

…..and as the West Wing character Leo said, it is indeed something many other Americans would not understand.

“We did not come here to fear the future, we came here to shape it.” ~ President Barack Obama

While I’m sure there are many cowardly exceptions to that rule in the Windy City….

…fearlessness is still very much the rule in Chicago. It’s “The Chicago Way.”

Again there are always exceptions to every rule…

…but my upcoming website will prove this trait is more often true than not true of authentic Chicagoans.

Most authentic Chicagoans typically trend towards, not so much fearlessness, but towards having the courage to just do it even if they are afraid.

Chicago really doesn’t like limits, and the city absolutely hates the word “Can’t.”

In fact, much of what I reveal about Chicago in my next project, from it’s stunning beauty to it’s amazing feats and innovations, to it’s outrageous, colorful and pioneering characters, can be attributed to Chicago hating two words:

“Can’t” and “Small.”

This extremely peculiar trait which is exclusive to Chicago aligns with one of the city’s most cherished mottoes: “I Will.”

This is a picture of Chi’s official “I Will” statue.

“The figure and slogan were dreamed up by Chicago artist Charles Holloway, who was the first-place winner in an 1891 contest sponsored by The Chicago Inter Ocean newspaper.”

“The Inter Ocean challenged artists to come up with “a figure typical of Chicago’s spirit” to represent the city – sort of like an Uncle Sam or John Bull for Chicago.” ~ The Digital Research Library of Illinois History Journal

“…just a man and his WILL to survive.” ~ Lyric from the Chicago-bred band Survivor’s life anthem “Eye of the Tiger.”

*Of course the band responsible for that stellar and timeless song is from Chicago. Where else?

You really can’t thumb your nose at the word “Can’t” more than Chicago’s “I Will” motto.

Case in point:

Why does Chicago have the only river in the world which flows backwards? Because Chicago wanted the Chicago River to flow backwards. It’s really that simple.

*More on this incredible feat detailed in my beyond interesting upcoming website all about Chicago and “The Chicago Way.”

No other city in America would have nor could have cultivated, trained and launched the first African American to the presidency.

No other city would have had the nerves, guts or audacity to even try.

“The difference between us and them, between you and success, is not that you never fail, but it’s how you recover from those failures – is that you keep getting up time and time again. You figure out what you did wrong, and then you make it right. I say that to my kids every day.” ~ Michelle Obama

This is how many Chicagoans were taught to handle life and then many Chicagoans teach their own kids the same way.

“Failure is a feeling long before it becomes an actual result.” ~ Michelle Obama

“What most people fail to understand is that by fearing the intangible unknown, you are creating the tangible known totally as a result of your fear. For example, if your fear of failure prevents you from doing something, you have just made that fear into a tangible reality by not doing it. Your inaction has manifested precisely what you feared.” ~ Pam

“The Chicago Way” = Fearlessness

“Anthony Trollope, an Englishman, visited Chicago. He said: “These businessmen in Chicago are reckless, and they fail a lot. But failure doesn’t bother them. Catastrophe doesn’t bother them. They bounce right back.” And that seems to be ingrained in the character of the city. The (Great Chicago) fire happens, and believe it or not, in the newspapers its seen as an opportunity. Chicago hops right to it after the fire and rebuilds itself in an astonishingly short period of time. It’s about a two year period.” ~ Author Donald L. Miller – (PBS)

That’s an extremely interesting quote on how quickly Chicago recovered from the legendary Great Chicago Fire of 1871.

Remember the myth of Mrs. O’Leary’s Cow?

*The following unusual video is narrated by the legendary broadcaster Walter Cronkite and takes you through step by step of the GREAT CHICAGO OF 1871.

Chicago then went on to invent, innovate, and create the Skyscraper which has been imitated all over the world and which is considered by many to be the greatest structure created since the Great Pyramids of Egypt.

Then Chicago went on to build the most beautiful city in America and one of the most beautiful cities in the world.

Smithsonian Channel: How The Great Chicago Fire Of 1871 Actually Benefitted Chicago.

*I will go into much more detail about the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 and Chicago’s extraordinary and one of a kind “I Will” response to it in my upcoming website all about Chicago. Stay tuned.

Back to the following quote:

One reason that quote is so very true about this extremely rare way of being which is most definitely deeply ingrained in the character of the Windy City…

….is that Chicago knows how to DRIVE

The Soundtrack For The Upcoming Segment:

“Sometimes, I feel the fear of uncertainty stinging clear
And I can’t help but ask myself how much I’ll let the fear
Take the wheel and steer
It’s driven me before
And it seems to have a vague, haunting mass appeal
But lately I am beginning to find
That I should be the one behind the wheel
Whatever tomorrow brings
I’ll be there with open arms and open eyes
Whatever tomorrow brings
I’ll be there, I’ll be there
So if I decide to waiver my chance
To be one of the hive
Will I choose water over wine
And hold my own and drive?
It’s driven me before
And it seems to be the way that everyone else gets around
But lately I am beginning to find
That when I drive myself my light is found” ~ Song’s lyrics

Incubus’s hit song “Drive” (2000)

“And I can’t help but ask myself how much I’ll let the fear
Take the wheel and steer
It’s driven me before
And it seems to have a vague, haunting mass appeal
But lately I am beginning to find
That I should be the one behind the wheel.” ~ Incubus

Its time to begin the process of LETTING GO of our fears and inhibitions, climb out of the back seat or passenger seat of our lives into the driver’s seat and DRIVE, ladies and gents….

…and one significant way that we can do that is by unearthing and honoring our FEELINGS and EMOTIONS.

“Fear is the cheapest room in the house. I would like to see you living in better conditions.” ~ Hafiz

Strongly disliking limits and having the courage to do what we fear can be a HUGE advantage in regard to the #1 reason why most people don’t achieve their goals and dreams….

…which is the Fear of Failure.

“Failure seldom stops you. What stops you is the fear of failure.” ~ Jack Lemmon

Rightly understood, failure isn’t really failure unless you give up or quit.

What most folks consider a failure is in reality a mere learning curve on the road to success and is not a failure IF you can persist on the road until you get there.

“How can we come into alignment with what does work unless we experience the consequences of what doesn’t work?” ~ Jan Spiller

This means you can’t succeed without initial failure because failures point us away from what doesn’t work while simultaneously laying a path in a NEW direction towards what will eventually work.

“Failure teaches success.” ~ Japanese Proverb

Exactly, but you FIRST have to know and feel your goals and dreams are worthy of persisting with…and that YOU are worthy of achieving them.

“It is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you live so cautiously that you might as well not have lived at all – in which case, you fail by default.” ~ J.K. Rowling

This past summer I happened upon one of Chicago’s multiple skate parks while taking a lovely walk in beautiful Grant Park. (named after yet another Illinois notable, Union Civil War hero and U.S. President Ulysses S. Grant).

I found watching the skating so fascinating that I also visited the skate park a few weekends later just to take in the action.

“We succeed when we realize that failure is the preparation for victories.” ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

The skate park I visited was Grant Park Skate Park, and I found what I saw there while viewing the action from the scenic bridge overlooking the park to be utterly fascinating and a really cool metaphor for this topic on the Fear of Failure.

“Every strike brings me closer to the next home run.” ~ Babe Ruth

For hours I watched young adults, teens and kids fall down, get right back up, dust themselves off, and try again over and over again.

“Man approaches the unattainable truth through a succession of errors.” ~ Aldous Huxley

No matter what they were riding: skateboards, skates, bikes, etc, it was literally a mass of people falling down, getting back up, dusting themselves off and then trying again.

Over and over and over and over and over again.

“To begin to think with purpose, is to enter the ranks of those strong ones who only recognize failure as one of the pathways to attainment.” ~ James Allen

Some fell down more than others, some fell down less, but all fell down, and many of these were HARD FALLS, falls that made me wince or mutter “ouch!” to myself.

Most of the skaters wore no protective padding so didn’t prepare in advance for the falls. Yet they all got back up and tried again….over and over again.

“One who fears failure limits his activities. Failure is only the opportunity to more intelligently begin again.” ~ Henry Ford

If these committed and determined skater dudes and gals aren’t a great metaphor for LIFE and how to live life successfully, I don’t know what is.

Not only that, they totally embody “The Chicago Way.”

“Men in this city “do not mind failures,” wrote Anthony Trollope, “and when they have failed, instantly begin again.” ~ From the book “Chicago: City of the Century”

The reward for all that falling down, getting right back up and trying it over and over and over and over again, no matter how hurt, bruised or battered you are?

The reward is that it eventually leads to you being a great skater or at the top of your life game in whatever the profession, career or endeavor you are trying to achieve in.

It leads to EXCELLENCE, to life satisfaction, and for many, to lots of joy and happiness.

“I’ve missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I’ve lost 300 games. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.” ~ Michael Jordan — June 21, 1991, after winning his first NBA Championship, (in Chicago, of course)

Examples Of Excellence…

This brief yet cool video previews the Grant Park Skate Park before it opened in 2014:

“You’ve got to lose to know how to win.” ~ Lyric from Aerosmith’s classic song “Dream On”

This video features Opening Day at the Grant Park Skate Park in 2014…and some badass skateboarding. Enjoy!

“You’ve got to get to the stage in life where going for it is more important than winning or losing.” ~ Arthur Ashe, Legendary Tennis Player

Also like these Chi kids in the following video demonstrate, you do what you have to do, even when the skate park is initially wet from the rain. No excuses, y’all.

“Often the difference between a successful man and a failure is not one’s better abilities or ideas, but the courage that one has to bet on his ideas to take a calculated risk and to act.” ~ Maxwell Maltz

Lastly, I don’t want to forget those Chi skater dudes who shun skateparks

“Being born and raised in Chicago made me tough. It made me strong. I feel like I can deal with anything. I truly believe that in my heart.” ~ Shani Davis – Olympic Gold Medal Champion Speed Skater

Being born and raised in Chicagoland is a blessing indeed.

“There is only one thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve: the fear of failure.” ~ Paulo Coelho

The Fear of Failure is the #1 inhibitor of living our dreams. This is true for Americans in particular.

“I’d rather regret the things that I have done than the things that I have not done.” ~ Lucille Ball

Using my own personal experience, I had a very difficult and painful time dealing with those same negative and self defeating emotions in the past and they hindered my progress greatly, but although I failed greatly, (many times, in fact), in the end I NEVER gave up.

“You never fail until you stop trying.” ~ Albert Einstein

The outcome?

I innovated My Head Meets Heart Kits and I’ve created additional revolutionary dream projects yet to be revealed.

“Somehow very early on I realized that pain passes. And the pain of failure passes too.” ~ Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor

In fact, My Head Meets Heart Kits were created including many of those “failures” I previously experienced. They just took another form.

“You have everything you need to build something far bigger than yourself.” ~ Seth Godin

This massive and one of a kind dream project is already 180 degrees different from what I ever anticipated creating…

…..but that is only because my previous vision for what I was creating was too small and severely limited by my own insecurities, limited beliefs, and self doubts.

Now my dream project goes way beyond my wildest dreams….

….and it’s STILL evolving and re-creating itself. My Head Meets Heart Kits and everything else included in this website are just the first phase of multiple phases to come.

“Start a huge, foolish project, like Noah…it makes absolutely no difference what people think of you.” ~ Rumi

If the fear of failure is a problem or issue for you, (as it is with most), along with doing your own personal development and self work, I highly suggest you also utilize My Head Meets Heart Kits titled “Overcome Fear of Failure” (Kit #17), daily as directed as you work towards achieving and living your dreams.

“For anybody who is on the downside of advantage and relying purely on courage, it’s possible.” ~ Russell Crowe

What is great about all My Head Meets Heart Kits is you can begin utilizing them immediately and with ZERO money because two of the seven main modalities included with each kit are accessible immediately and are 100% Free.

“Take chances, make mistakes. That’s how you grow. Pain nourishes your courage. You have to fail in order to practice being brave.” ~ Mary Tyler Moore

Its extremely important to know that anything of any significance in life is going to fail many times before it succeeds. That’s just the way life works.

“I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” ~ Thomas Edison

A baby falls many times before he or she learns to walk.

A first-time basketball player is going to miss many hoops before he or she scores a basket.

An amateur public speaker is going to choke many times before he or she is able to give an effective and compelling speech.

“I believe that anyone can conquer fear by doing the things he fears to do, provided he keeps doing them until he gets a record of successful experience behind him.” ~ Eleanor Roosevelt

Its important to know that any REAL accomplishment is going to come with a lot of work, a lot of struggle, tons of disappointment, and a lot of *seeming* failures along the way.

“If it wasn’t hard everyone would do it. It’s the hard that makes it great.” ~ Tom Hanks

Please remember the following:

“The more you fail, the more you will succeed.” ~ Alberto Giacometti (Legendary Swiss sculptor and artist)

You absolutely cannot achieve success without failure. Any person you see who has achieved anything of any significance first failed many, many times on the road to that achievement.

“Failure should be our teacher, not our undertaker. Failure is delay, not defeat. It is a temporary detour, not a dead-end. Failure is something we can avoid only by saying nothing, doing nothing and being nothing.” ~ Denis Waitley

“Every great work, every great accomplishment, has been brought into manifestation through holding to the vision; and often just before the big achievement comes apparent failure and discouragement.” ~ Florence Scovel Shinn

“There is no innovation and creativity without failure. Period.” ~ Brene Brown

*Best-selling author Dr. Brene Brown has written extensively on transcending the Fear of Failure.

“Rising Strong starts with getting curious about our emotions.” ~ Dr. Brene Brown

*Book Lender has Dr. Brene Brown’s extraordinary best-selling book “Rising Strong” for rent, so be sure to check this amazing book out.

“Whatever you fear most has no power; it is your fear that has the power.” ~ Sri Chimnoy

Offering valuable tools and resources to help spur Self Mastery and Self Empowerment and for you to live your BEST life is definitely one of the main purposes of My Head Meets Heart Kits, ladies and gents.

“We have not wings, we cannot soar; but we have feet to scale and climb.” ~ Longfellow

One last thing…

I want to advise all of you to Be Flexible, because once you get on the path to being better and you make that a part of your every day life, you change.

What you thought was truth becomes false.

What you thought you wanted becomes something totally different.

Who you thought would make you happy changes.

What you thought you desired changes.

The key word here is what you “thought” and when you change or raise your thoughts, your desires, wants and motivations also raise and change.

“Your essence is rising so quickly, that something that you might have embraced as truth yesterday may no longer be your truth today. Flexibility is so very important. You are constantly growing and evolving.” ~ Carolyn Ann O’Riley

Think about it…

If your consciousness or your opinion of yourself is not very high right now, what you desire right now may match your own low expectations for yourself. You may see your capabilities being extremely limited and tailor your goals and aspirations in alignment with your own low expectations.

When you begin to study, learn, grow, better yourself, etc, your opinion of yourself will inevitably RAISE and when that happens your view of YOU will likely change.

Your view of your own capabilities will EXPAND and you will begin wanting more or something different than what you previously envisioned for yourself.

Keep this in mind and BE FLEXIBLE. Your vision of you may become much larger than you could ever possibly imagine or dream for yourself right now.

For example, My Head Meets Heart Kits evolved from a former website that I began building years ago that had absolutely nothing to do with 90% of what is included in this multi phase project I have been creating of which My Head Meets Heart Kits and this unusual website are just a part of.

What happened?

I kept the core of my original website as a framework which was always intended to help empower others, but I changed, I evolved, I transformed, I grew, I became wiser, and as I became all those things and larger, this project became larger, more complex, and much more innovative, creative, and impactful.

Previously I had limited self esteem and considered myself much more limited and incapable when I began this project which I liken to a journey.

Not anymore.

This is the #1 reason why I recommend so strongly that everyone have their own personal website, particularly women, because my original website and the many websites that I have created since then which are all a part of this multi-phase project were something that unwittingly became my vehicle for transformation

It enabled me to create something over the years which became one of a kind and truly (in my opinion) GREAT i.e. “My Head Meets Heart Kits”

“When you are inspired by some great purpose, some extraordinary project, all your thoughts break their bonds. Your mind transcends limitations, your consciousness expands in every direction and you find yourself in a new, great and wonderful world. Dormant forces, faculties and talents become alive and you discover yourself to be a greater person than you ever dreamed yourself to be.” ~ Patanjali (Indian Philosopher)

Everything mentioned in that Patanjali quote definitely happened for me, and I hope that the same happens for many of YOU because the experience is both life changing and life affirming.

Just imagine discovering you’re more than what you ever dreamed yourself of being or are capable of.

Just imagine.

“Twenty years from now, you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the tradewinds in your sails. Explore…Dream…Discover!” ~ Mark Twain

Finally, the following video is dedicated to my fellow Chicagoans and to my beloved hometown. I LOVE you Chi. 🙂

“Chicago is a tough hard diamond, continually being cut and polished. Its beauty is in its people and its soul. Chicagoans never ask for pity or mercy. When tragedy strikes we do what needs to be done. Chicagoans are not hand wringers and weepers. Chicago is strong. Chicago is brave. Chicago has no fear. Chicago gets up over and over again. Every time it gets better.” ~ Peter Bella – Chicago Now
